I don't have the resources to solve the problems with the amount of users the site has.

If you are making money yes, but these sites don't make money. As they grow, more and more people try to abuse the system and cause problems.

I just don't have the money to hire staff to monitor this and the volunteer system was working alright, but they don't have enough tools to monitor everything.

Hmmm "trolls" are a problem on any website. You can create a login system, which should help. This sums up your problems http://www.alistapart.com/articles/identitymatters I think local businesses know how much traffic the HL site gets, advertise for them instead of the google banners for more $$. If you still don't have the time why not sell?

A sign up system means less users. Local businesses won't advertise. I've tried selling it and they think it's too expensive (I was practically giving it away) or they don't want to be mentioned on the web site in fear of people talking bad about them.

I've tried selling it/giving it away for about 6 months now.

No offense but shutting down the site intermittently means less users. If you don't mind me asking how much are you asking for it?

Yes, the site has lost users by it not being available, old ones and potential new ones. People were abusing the system and leaving it on and ignoring it was not an option and unfortunately I didn't have time to immediately fix it.

I didn't have a specific amount in mind, it depends on what someone wanted to buy. The name, the code or everything.

The newer towns are all "franchised", which is probably what I need to do with all of them. Let someone else deal with the daily operation and I can just tinker with the code and add new features.

Hi Chris,
My family and I just moved to Long Valley from Maplewood NJ. We were, and still are regular users of the local message board there called maplewoodonline.com . Jamie Ross and his brother Dave have been the administrators for at least 8-10 years. I know it's been tough for them to continue with their site, but I believe they've made a decent business out of it.

We would love to see the same for a forum in this area.
