Dorothy Beckbissinger was looking through a family photo album in the den of her Middle Valley Road home Tuesday afternoon when she saw the runaway tanker truck rolling through her backyard toward a steep slope.

The noise, when the truck went over the edge, was like a freight train going through the forest.

"It was pretty amazing," said Beckbissinger, who is 57. "I heard screaming and looked up and saw the oil tank careening down the driveway backwards. It was running out of control."

Long Valley and its history

A drive through the center of Long Valley brings the visitor in contact with antique stores and restaurants in 200-year-old buildings.

The Long Valley downtown revitalization committee wants to use the town's historic attributes to attract business and tourists. In general, it's a good plan. The downtown, which includes the intersection of Routes 513 and 517, already has three restaurants (one just opened), and two more are expected to open by next spring. After people dine, the hope is that they'll spend some time walking through the neighborhood, a neighborhood that soon will feature new sidewalks and old-time gas lights.

Washington Twp in midst of revitalizing downtown

Meeting the needs of the present while maximizing the charms of the past is the key to revitalizing Long Valley, according to entrepreneurs and community groups working toward two goals.

The first is to entice business owners to occupy key historic vacant spaces downtown, such as Ye Olde Ballentine Village on Schooley's Mountain Road and The River Building at the corner of Routes 513 and 24.

The second goal is to provide enough retail and dining variety to tempt residents, weekday commuters and weekend eco-tourists to spend a few hours downtown.
